About Abigail
I began my design life in college, designing and making dozens of original costumes for plays, musicals, and Gilbert & Sullivan operettas with my best friend. I went on to get a PhD in English Literature, studying 19th century novels, Oscar Wilde, and design history. I have published a book about queer culture and fashion in the Victorian era, and I teach art writing at NYU Tisch.
I have baked cakes for as long as I can remember, and several years ago I began learning the art of sugar flowers.
I’m inspired by paintings — from Dutch old masters to Impressionism to modernist abstraction — and by Victorian and art nouveau design; by fashion, old and new; by theater and opera costumes; and of course by flowers, wherever I find them — my garden and botanical gardens, florist arrangements and bodega displays, and your weddings!
